  • Brian Thompson was murdered.

As the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, his death sparked celebrations among some.

While murder is an abhorrent response to frustrations with the healthcare system, it is a reaction that we have seen throughout history. Violence has been used as a means to claim nations and to express deep-seated prejudices regarding race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. It reflects a foundational aspect of America’s past.

I am not equating frustrations with the medical establishment to the evils of racism, colonialism, or other forms of bigotry. Instead, I am highlighting that the justification for murder, no matter the cause, is not a new phenomenon.

The celebration of this murder doesn't indicate a decline in societal morals; it merely reflects a long-standing issue embedded in our culture.

    This ain't nothin' new.

    Please Note...
The young child is depicted holding a TOY gun. My intention is not to cast the child in a negative light, nor to criticize the individual who captured the photograph. Instead, I have utilized the image to abstractly illustrate the pervasive nature of violence in our society throughout history.
