Regarding matters of faith, I believe in respecting each person's journey. Instead, this piece serves as my abstract interpretation of how white people manipulated the Bible to justify the horrors of slavery, attempting to render the enslaved docile.
In this artwork, the ad for sliced bacon represents the thwarted progress of enslaved Black individuals. The symbolism of a whole pig traditionally signifies advancement and the promise of moving forward. However, in a striking contrast, religious traditions like Judaism deem pigs unclean and prohibit their consumption, casting them as symbols of impurity, sin, and moral degradation. The price displayed for the bacon abstractly evokes the dehumanizing reality of enslaved Black people being bought and sold like mere commodities.
Furthermore, the obscured religious artwork behind the advertisement symbolizes how white society distorted the Bible and its teachings, allowing the stain of slavery to overshadow its true message.
