  • The Christian faith occupies a complex and often racially charged position in the history of Black communities around the world, primarily due to its exploitation by White colonists and slave traders as a means of subjugation. Our ancestors were coerced into embracing Christianity, a doctrine that was forcefully imparted by slave masters who wielded it as a tool of oppression. Over time, however, Black people transformed the Bible into a source of hope and a powerful message of emancipation, even as the wealth and land remained firmly in the hands of the oppressors.

Religion played a pivotal role in the struggle for emancipation and was a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. While significant progress has been achieved, the shadows of racism, discrimination, and prejudice continue to loom large.

I hold no judgment against those in the Black community who find solace in the Bible and religion—every individual is entitled to their own beliefs.

The artwork I created serves as an abstract reflection on a profound question: Why does the Black community who face the harshest challenges in society remain steadfastly religious?

An intriguing aspect of this dynamic is that African American church congregations are predominantly composed of women, highlighting the unique intersection of faith, resilience, and community.
