Poster -Holding On: To Be or Not to Be?
Human beings are inherently complex and multifaceted. Characteristics such as facial hair, body hair, hairstyles, clothing, and cosmetics are not inherently tied to any specific gender; rather, society categorizes them into binary definitions. It is important to recognize that gender norms are social constructs rather than absolute truths.
We must acknowledge that gender exists along a spectrum, characterized by a rich diversity of identities. However, many individuals do not fully embrace this understanding. We also navigate a society that often upholds male dominance, leading to men feeling apprehensive about expressing traits or preferences traditionally associated with femininity. The concept of masculinity itself is frequently viewed as a fragile status. In this context, achieving and maintaining manhood can feel challenging, with societal expectations placing undue pressure on this identity.
Consider the scenario of a man who wishes to wear lipstick or fragrance that is traditionally marketed toward women. Should he be perceived as a lesser embodiment of masculinity for such choices? Is he worthy of rejection simply because the traditional binary framework confines femininity to those culturally designated as women? It is my belief that he should not be subjected to such judgments. Every individual should have the freedom to express their authentic selves and resist societal pressures to conform to narrow definitions of identity.
In the artwork, the monkey symbolizes perseverance and dedication to one’s identity. The plastic bag represents society's suffocating discrimination, prejudice, and ignorance. The abstract tattoo of a fly on the individual's face illustrates a desire to escape societal stigma. Additionally, the portrayal of the squirrel conveys the need to overcome life’s challenges.
