  • White feelings should never be held in higher regard than black lives. -Rachel Cargle

This artwork represents my abstract exploration of the irrational fears that some white individuals harbor regarding black power. To center their own emotions within the narrative, they frequently distort the meaning of black power, cultivating apprehension among those who share their mindset. For decades, tears and self-victimization have been wielded as powerful tools to silence and marginalize Black voices in their pursuit of empowerment.

When white individuals articulate these unfounded fears, they effectively disengage from essential conversations about racism, opting instead to look the other way. This metaphorical non-violent tactic seeks to suppress black power, striving to render it powerless. When Black individuals bravely call out this behavior for what it truly is, we often find ourselves unjustly labeled as the aggressors.

There exists a steadfast refusal to recognize that any expression or action of black power—whether manifested through protests, the creation of joyful safe spaces, or the advocacy for self-reliance and self-determination—is not driven by a desire for revenge, but rather by a deep yearning for empowerment. These persistent mischaracterizations not only undermine our mission but also deny the legitimacy of our struggle for equality.

In essence, some white individuals fear that black power will yield a reversal of power dynamics, enacting upon them what has historically been done to us. This fear is both irrational and unfounded.
