Poster -For Nurse Maria
The fate of elderly slaves in the United States was in the hands of the slaveholders. Some slaveholders murdered or abused their elderly slaves.
An example of a slave owner who was tried for murdering her slave was Eliza Rowand, a woman who lived in Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1840s. She was accused of beating her elderly nurse, Maria, to death with a stick in 1847. She claimed that Maria had attacked her first and that she acted in self-defense. However, the evidence suggested that Maria was too old and frail to pose any threat to Eliza. Eliza was found guilty of manslaughter but was pardoned by the governor after a public petition. -AAIHS.ORG
