Poster -Different Journeys
Almost every individual grapples with some form of societal discrimination. For many, this struggle resembles a long, arduous journey marked by a scarcity of support and understanding from the world around them. It’s akin to traversing a rocky, uneven road without shoes—where every step is met with discomfort and pain.
What some white individuals often overlook is that, even when facing their own challenges, they are not burdened by the added weight of societal discrimination based on the color of their skin. Being poor in America can be an immense struggle, but the experience of being poor and Black amplifies that struggle. Black poverty is fundamentally different from white poverty. While encountering misogyny is undoubtedly distressing, the intersection of misogyny and racism poses a far greater challenge. White women may endure their own unfortunate experiences with misogyny, yet they do not have to navigate the complexities of racism alongside it. The reality is that most white people do not contend with the dual oppressions and layered hardships that many others face.
In this artwork, the Special K cereal symbolizes abundance, prosperity, and well-being—elements often more accessible to white individuals, given that the cereal is primarily made of rice. In stark contrast, the Black figures in the background reflect the pervasive belief that the legacies of racism and slavery have vanished from our collective consciousness and that these histories should remain unspoken. The white woman, adorned with a shoe, embodies the notion that despite her own struggles, she still possesses an undeniable advantage in society.
