  • Don’t wish us a Happy Black History Month after having spat on the graves of Black heroes and sheroes who died in pursuit of unfulfilled promises to us. It’s offensive. -Shaun Harper

Trump's lackluster Black History Month celebration serves as a striking illustration of how he both celebrates and undermines black history simultaneously.

In my view, this event was yet another chapter in his ongoing gaslighting of the Black community. He presents himself to the public as an ally, all the while dismantling the very policies that foster racial equity.

Consider the irony: he signs an executive order aimed at defunding schools that teach critical race theory, yet announces a plan for a statue honoring Muhammad Ali. This duplicity is not only hypocritical but baffling. He has effectively outlawed the teachings and principles championed by Muhammad Ali and countless other black activists—principles for which many have sacrificed so much.

I recognize that there are prominent Black figures—politicians, activists, celebrities—who stand by him. It breaks my heart. The pain is profound. However, I won't label them as sellouts. They genuinely believe they are serving the best interests of the Black community and America. I often wonder if they realize that while they may have secured a seat at Trump's table, they are being served a mere semblance of a meal, mere morsels.

This artwork is an abstract reflection of my feelings as I observe Black individuals donning MAGA hats, expressing unwavering loyalty to both Trump and the MAGA ideology.
