  • This artwork is my abstract interpretation of legal and socialization challenges Black males face in a 21st-century “post-racial” society.

The association of Black males with criminality is a deeply rooted issue that pervades modern society. Myths, stereotypes, and racist ideologies have driven unjust policies and court rulings, leading to a staggering increase in the incarceration rates of Black men today. These damaging misconceptions, disseminated through various channels including the media, have reinforced a "brute" stereotype that unfairly characterizes Black men. In contemporary discourse, this negative representation has morphed into the derogatory label “thug,” often used indiscriminately.

In recent years, law enforcement has disturbingly resorted to employing deadly force against Black males, labeling them as “suspects” or “persons of interest” without sufficient justification. The exploitation of these victims' past criminal records, physical appearance, or misunderstood attributes has been misused to justify their tragic and unlawful deaths, highlighting the urgent need for change in how society views and treats Black men.
