  • Self-acceptance is a complex journey that many individuals undertake, particularly for those considering coming out or those who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. The process can be especially challenging for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

A significant issue that persists is internalized negativity, where societal prejudice is absorbed, leading to self-stigmatization and detrimental feelings of self-hatred. This internal conflict, often exacerbated by rigid beliefs surrounding gender and sexual orientation, can result in feelings of shame and a diminished sense of self-worth. It is important to recognize that these feelings arise from societal biases and do not reflect a person's true worth or identity.

I created this artwork as an abstract representation of the complex emotions that individuals may experience during this journey. The depiction of the monkey symbolizes perseverance and dedication to one's identity. The plastic bag serves as a metaphor for society's suffocating discrimination, prejudice, and ignorance. The abstract tattoo of a fly on the individual's face illustrates the desire to escape from societal stigma. The portrayal of the squirrel conveys the necessity to overcome life's challenges. Beneath these elements lies the origin of the conflict. The protruding veins symbolize the subconscious feelings of stigmatization and the yearning for acceptance. Lastly, the deformed sharp instrument presents a dual meaning: it illustrates society's ongoing discrimination and disrespect towards the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the individual's struggle to maintain their pride in the face of such adversity.
