Framed poster -Generational Wealth
Creating this artwork allowed me to reflect on my father, who worked tirelessly seven days a week during my childhood. My mother, a devoted stay-at-home mom, managed our household, ensuring that essential items were always stocked, including the Money House Blessing spray. To my father, this air freshener represented a hope for blessings and financial abundance in our home.
I also contemplated the state of generational wealth in the Black community and the systemic barriers hindering our progress. The memory of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and its economic repercussions weighed on my mind, as did the legacy of figures like Madam C.J. Walker. I drew inspiration from iconic shows like Good Times and The Jeffersons, which highlight the resilience of Black families who work hard against stereotypes of laziness. Nikki Giovanni's words from her poem "Nikki Rosa" resonate deeply: "Black love is black wealth."
In this artwork, the image of boxed elbow macaroni represents abundance and the biblical significance of righteousness, love, and charity, as pasta is derived from wheat. The lid from Murray's pomade symbolizes the sun, reflecting optimism and the remarkable potential of Black individuals when they commit to their goals. The pyramid stands for our strongest, most triumphant moments. The two individuals embody faith and the relentless spirit of perseverance.
