  • The relationship between the Black church and sexuality, as well as gender conformity, has been complex and evolving. Historically, the Black church has often taken a condemning stance towards Black LGBTQIA+ individuals, using outdated and exclusionary rhetoric in the form of anti-gay sermons or failing to adopt inclusive practices when addressing LGBTQIA+ issues. This lack of inclusion has led to LGBTQIA+ members feeling ignored and marginalized within the congregation. Furthermore, the presence of anti-gay attitudes among heterosexual congregants has contributed to an unwelcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals in the church, exacerbating the negative attitudes they may already experience.

This exclusion and lack of acceptance within the Black church reflect a societal expectation of manhood that strongly aligns with heteronormativity and compulsory heterosexuality. These expectations have greatly influenced the church environment, further perpetuating the difficulties faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking acceptance and inclusion.
