The art I've created delves into the profound impact of entrenched anti-LGBTQIA sentiments and traditional gender norms within black and brown communities. These societal attitudes can have particularly detrimental effects on the mental well-being of LGBTQIA individuals of color, as they often rely on their ethnic communities for support due to facing racism within LGBTQIA spaces.
One prevalent misconception within black and brown communities is the belief that any departure from traditional notions of masculinity is equated with being a "defective" man. This narrow view often leads to the stigmatization of gender-nonconforming individuals.
In my art, I use the symbol of plastic bubble wrap as a metaphor for the intricate issue of heterosexism and anti-LGBTQIA beliefs. While the bubble wrap serves as a necessary shield against the harmful effects of these beliefs, it also conveys the sense of alienation experienced by LGBTQIA individuals. Sadly, black and brown communities often struggle to accept and support gender non-conforming individuals.
