What does "Karen" signify?
"Karen" has emerged as a pejorative slang term, characterizing an obnoxious, entitled, and often angry middle-aged white woman who leverages her privilege to impose her will on others or to critique their behaviors—sometimes with a racial undertone.
What inspired me to create this artwork?
While I've encountered my share of "Karens," it was a particular incident involving a Karen highlighted in mainstream media that truly fueled my creativity. Recently, she unleashed a barrage of unwarranted and misguided criticisms toward a prominent Black woman political commentator. Astonishingly, she even had the audacity to label this commentator as a racist.
There will always be "Karens" attempting to dictate how Black women should look, speak, and express their emotions—especially their anger and moments of joy.
Yet, let it be clear: Karens may attempt to stifle the voices of Black women, but they will never succeed. Our voices will continue to resonate with strength and authenticity.
