My name is Tamiko, and I am a self-taught artist fueled by a deep passion for visual expression. My love for art sparked long before I fully understood what it meant to me. Growing up in the vibrant inner city of Rochester, New York, I was captivated by the energy of graffiti, the heartbeat of hip-hop culture, and the resilience of the people around me, all striving for a brighter tomorrow. I experienced what we now call Black Joy, long before it had a name. To me, beauty thrived in unexpected places—like the faded flyers plastered on corner stores and the glimmers in the grains of pedestrian sidewalks. While the 6 o’clock news often showcased the struggles of lower-income neighborhoods, I found an array of beauty woven into every story and individual I encountered.

 

As I matured, I became more attuned to the societal issues affecting my community and the world beyond it. Concepts like racism, misogyny, homophobia, redlining, and various forms of discrimination started to make their presence known. Living through the height of the AIDS crisis and witnessing the Los Angeles riots on my screen, I began to grasp the complexities of our human family, often plagued by dysfunction and self-destruction.

 

These experiences are the canvas of my artistic vision. When I finally mustered the courage to embrace my calling as a visual artist, I made a promise to myself: to make art that is accessible to everyone. I didn’t want to stop at wall art; I envisioned creating pieces that allow people to engage with my work in various meaningful ways.

 

Each artwork I create is a slice of my voice, a reflection of my journey, and a hopeful reminder that we are all connected. I truly wish for my pieces to resonate with those who appreciate my unique style of expression.
